Flooding has been more prominent over the past few months. It seems as if it's inevitable during this time. Here are two reasons why flooding is happening more often.
Climate Change
Climate change has been an issue for many years. Climate change affects rising maximum temperatures, rising minimum temperatures, rising sea levels, higher ocean temperatures, an increase in heavy precipitation, shrinking glaciers, and thawing permafrost. Climate change is a direct cause of carbon pollution. Due to the increase of carbon pollution around the world, floods have been a more common thing to us. This is caused by more water being evaporated from the ocean due to intense heat, then this water is brought back by heavy storms.
Heavy Storms
Over the past month, we have had many heavy storms. Windsor Essex County averaged over 100 mm of rainfall in only one day! These heavy storms have also taken place consistently which has not allowed the ground to dry in between storms. This allows the water to start flooding, instead of soaking into the ground. As little as 50mm of rain causes flooding. Isn’t that a scary thought? Your home is one thing that needs protected.
Protecting your home and your belongings are our biggest priority. When it starts to flood, basements are the first thing to flood. Basements also tend to hold our most valuable possessions. You can help your house and belongings by installing a backwater valve.
Install a Backwater Valve
Though backwater valves will not prevent flooding, it will prevent sewage from coming into your house. It’s already bad when clean rainwater floods your house and belongings, but its worse when dirty used sewage also floods your house. This happens many times with flooding and it results in people having to throw their most precious belongings away. A backwater valve is a valve that you connect to your sewage line that allows sewage to only flow one way; out of your house. That way, if there’s a flood and sewage backs up, your house will not flood with sewage water. This is a great addition to any home.
How Much is a Backwater Valve?
Backwater valves and installation can cost someone quite a bit. That tends to scare people off from installing one into their home. Luckily for all Windsor Essex County residents, there is a basement flooding protection subsidy program!
The city of Windsor is providing families who are owners of residential dwellings a financial subsidy to protect their home. The city is offering up to $2,800 per property to add this valve. This subsidy is a great reason to add a backwater valve into your home. Links will be included below to read into how to apply for this subsidy.
How Do I Book You To Add My Valve?
We would love to install your valve for you. In order for us to install through the subsidy, you must first apply online for the subsidy through the links provided below. Next you will approve our quote and apply for a permit. When we obtain the permit, we will call and schedule work and inspection with the city. Then we will complete the work and have an inspection. We will then backfill and cement the hole, clean up your yard, and then send you an invoice. The process is so easy and yet another reason to commit to a backwater valve.
